What is a URL? ? (Uniform Resource Locator)

Patty A URL is something that points to a file somewhere on your computer or on someone else's computer, including over the internet. For example: http://politics.ap.org/states/mi.html

http: is the protocol or method of transfer (protocol – a specification, such as http, that defines how computers will talk to each other.)

// indicates a computer name follows

politics is the server (server- the computer that is host to a Web site)

ap.org. is the domain (domain name – the address used to locate a particular Web site or reach an e-mail system. In e-mail addresses, it is the portion to the right of the @ sign. It includes a suffix defining the type of entity, such as .com for commerce.)

/states is the folder.

/mi.html indicates a file (.html is the file type)
