Confused about the differences between a bmp, png, gif, and jpeg? Want to know which you should use and when? This short article may help you! Here are the four basic, commonly used image formats that you will find can be used and viewed by nearly all programs that use images. On the internet, these are the only four image types that you can put on a web page and be sure that visitors will be able to see it. Name Transparency? Size Lossy? When To Use? bmp no huge no Use when you are making your own images to work with, because nearly every program can read and edit these. Don’t use on the internet or send these to people via email, because they are so huge. gif yes smallest color loss When you need really small images, and you don’t care about color loss. Gif’s only store up to 256 colors, so photos won’t look as well. This is better for clip art, drawings, or non-essential images. This is the smallest, and so its best for email and the internet. They can support transparency so its particularly useful for many internet applications. jpeg, jpg(they are both the same) no smaller muddy These work best for photos and other “complicated” images. They can store all 16 million colors. The downside is that they can be muddy or lossy, so the image will be distorted somewhat. However, for most photos, it isn’t noticeable. For very simple images, the loss will be noticeable, so you’ll want a gif or png in those cases. Jpg’s can be used for internet or email. png yes small no Although files can be larger than their jpg or gif counterparts, png files have no loss whatsoever, support transparency, and all 16 million colors. Png files are still way smaller than bitmaps and look exactly the same. You can use it on the internet and they are good for email as well. Use this if you don’t know which one to pick.
